Tasmanian Self Drive Holidays: Day 1
Welcome to Tasmania!
Upon arrival in Hobart take over your hire vehicle for the next few days.
Explore Tasmania’s capital city. You might like to explore the vibrant Salamanca precinct – close to Hobart’s waterfront and dock area it is famous for its artist studios, restaurants, bars, cafes, and local shops. On Saturday, Salamanca is home to Tasmania’s own market / Salamanca Market. Nearby you find historical Battery Point with its little laneways, old seafarers’ cottages, colonial architecture, and historical ambiance.
You might like to take a scenic drive to experience spectacular views from Mt Wellington (weather dependent). The view from the summit stretches over Hobart and much of the state’s south, and the slopes are laced with walking trails.

Tasmanian Self Drive Holidays: Day 2
Today is all about spectacular coastlines, fascinating geological features and World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site. Take a scenic drive to the rugged Tasman Peninsula Access via Eaglehawk Neck, a thin isthmus once guarded by dogs to prevent convicts escaping. The coastal environment is home to the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere and unique rock formations, such as Tessellated Pavement, the Blow Hole, Tasman Arch or Devil’s Kitchen. Visit Port Arthur Historic Site, a special place of vivid history, cultural heritage and compelling convict stories. We recommend you join one of the guided tours of the site and embark on the short Harbour Cruise.

After a morning at leisure travel to the historic village of Richmond, nestled in the Coal River Valley Wine region. Explore the old town or sample some of Tasmania’s cool temperate wines on one of the many local vineyards in the region. Continue your journey to Tasmania’s sunny East Coast and the Freycinet National Park, famous for Wineglass Bay.

Explore the Freycinet Peninsula. Join the Wineglass Bay cruise to discover Wineglass Bay from a different perspective or do one of the many short walks in the area, such as the popular Wineglass Bay Lookout Track – with magnificent views over famous Wineglass Bay. If you feel up for it walk down to the beach, one of the top ten beaches in the world.
Saffire: You might want to take advantage of one of the many Saffire experiences – guided or at your leisure. Perhaps visit the Freycinet Marine Oyster Farm, Wineglass Bay Lookout Walk, The Tasmanian Devil Experience or even some kayaking and bird-watching? There is an option for every mood and every moment and give you the opportunity to engage and connect with Freycinet’s stunning natural wonders and attractions.

After a morning at leisure continue to Tasmania’s northern, the most and second largest city – Launceston. The whole region is packed who city and country charm, gorgeous old towns, excellent food, wine and beautiful scenery. The city itself is one of Australia’s oldest cities and offers one of the best-preserved early cityscapes in Australia with its elegant Colonial and Victorian architecture and century-old parks. Just a short distance from the city center, Cataract Gorge is a slice of wilderness right in the heart of town and definitely worth a visit.

Return to Hobart via the Heritage Highway, the most direct route between the two cities. The road follows the same route built by convict labour in the early 1800s. Just off the Highway you can find the historic towns of Kempton, Oatlands and Ross – each offering fascinating examples of early Australian architecture, and a charming collection of colonial homes and cottages. Back in Hobart, it is time to bid our beautiful island state farewell. Return to Hobart Airport.
